Ready for it?

March 2015 -
When I'm Up I can't get down - Wash

May 2015 -
Black Melt - Only Lovers Left Alive

Two vids in 2015. Two vids. TWO.VIDS.  I started 10 seconds of an Agent Carter vid and was so frustrated with the logo'd source that I abandoned it in favour of waiting for the DVD's, No real point answering the Meme questions.

Previous years if you're interested :

gah.... Real life just wasn't letting me get into the vidding vibe.  I have better hopes for 2016, just need to sort out my machine as it's dying if I attempt anything slightly strenuous.  Here's hoping my enthusiasm will return

Edit: I can't count there were two.

More for my own benefit as reference, I’m certain no-one out there is really interested in my vidding year.

Vids edited 2014

January             Iron – The Hollow Crown –Prince Hal/Henry V

May                  Mister Booze – Multi Whedonverse

June                 Counting Stars – Tony/Pepper (IM1,2,3 & Avengers)

July                  Coriolanus  - Donmar Production (Pt 1)

October          Golden Boy – Thor,Thor:DW, Avengers. Thor according to Loki
Boogey Man – Angel the Series
Teddy Bears Picnic - The Cabin in the Woods

December        Must Be Santa – Bad Santa

This year started off pretty unproductive and then had a strong showing at the end  which I suppose is a hopeful sign. Two more vids than last, although Coriolanus is still does not have a concluding part 2. I may or may not do that this year if I can find the music I wish to use. And it’s been the songs/music as stumbling blocks to new projects. I do have shows/films that I love but lack the ‘right’ song.

Favourite Vid
Hmm can’t decide between Counting Stars and Golden Boy. The MCU has my heart currently so either of those.

Least Favourite
Coriolanus, only because it is basically just half the story.

Most Successful
In terms of comments I think Counting Stars garnered the most comments, and hits on YouTube too.

Most Under appreciated, IMO.
I think I grossed everyone out with Bad Santa as this remains totally uncommented to date. Not possible to post on YouTube due to audio issues.  Vids posted elsewhere never get much attention.

Most Fun to make
I always enjoy the funny vids and there were three/fourish this year, Mister Booze and Boogey Man were a pain to clip for, but Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Bad Santa were great fun and not a clipping nightmare.

Biggest Vid fail.
Sony Vegas still sits in the box waiting to be installed. I’m pretty useless really.

Hardest to Make
Iron and Coriolanus were tough just due to the amount of dialogue to clip out, plus  subtitles. I’d never vidded theatre source before so I guess Coriolanus may win out this category.

Kick Ass/Sexiest
Was there any this year that you could describe as Kick Ass? There is some action in Counting Stars and Golden Boy but not all out. Not a lot of sex in them either.

Unintentionally telling video.
Using a nursery rhyme for a horror film. There may be issues & don’t wish to discuss.

Things I've learnt this year
Nothing technically. Generally there are  ‘good’ years creatively and pretty ‘lean’ ones.

Things to work on
Make more vids. Be a little more creative with sourcing music.

Vid Projects that I want to finish
I started clipping a Firefly vid that I’d like to make the next project.

Not sure if anyone really reads these things but it's handy for me to look back on and despair.

Vids edited 2013

March - Born To Kill - Faith Lehane (BtVS / AtS)

May - Run Boy Run - Harry Potter (Film)

May - Goodnight and Go - Unrelated. (Film)

June - Captain Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean (Film)

September - Serenade in Blue - The Deep Blue Sea (Film)

December - Fell on Black Days - Dark Willow. (BtVS)

My god. Just.Six.Vids. I thought last year was pretty low output,  but this is the least I have made since I started editing. Although not memed on LJ in 2005 (10 vids) and From Aug 2004 I made 6 in 6months. To be perfectly honest the last one was a struggle. This makes me sad and not helpful in terms of motivation.

Favourite Vid
Run Boy Run always evokes emotions felt watching the last few films,  so it's kind of special for that alone. There are moments in it that I adore and one day I will make a HP vid that is entirely happy.

Least Favourite
Doesn't seem fair to pick a least favourite. Serenade in Blue was between a choice of two very different songs, curiosity nudges me to try a remake with the other song. Just to see how it works.  It's also a depressing film so you're never gonna feel happy seeing all that misery.

Most Successful
Define successful?- we'll go with popular/most commented.
In terms of comments on LJ - Run, Boy Run had the most - and Goodnight the least. Goodnight wins the YT hits with 2800+ (there's a reason for that possibly)  That said though - commenting isn't what it used to be and I am pleasantly surprised when I get any on LJ.

Most Under appreciated, IMO.
None really. Some had a real slow start but then picked up later in terms of views.  I thought the PotC Jack vid would be more popular on YT but for a while it wasn't available to view on mobiles etc. Run Boy is still prohibited for mobiles & TV. I guess it's a copyright issue?

Most Fun to make
Captain Jack Sparrow. By a mile. I still laugh at the penis/balls metaphor but mind is always in the gutter.  Plus my only vid with a goat,  which is a personal milestone.

Biggest Vid fail.
See my comment last year re Sony Vegas.I didn't even open the program. I don't think it would have helped with the awol muse.  I still see tiny things in most of the vids that I wish I'd fixed.

Hardest to Make
Probably Fell on Black Days. I was all at sea with that one.

Kick Ass/Sexiest
A goodly part of Born To Kill. I liked the atmosphere of that one.

Unintentionally telling video.
If I tell then you'll know and it will be intentional. There's one that feels a little too personal on occasions.  See if you can guess.

Things I've learnt this year
It's possible to go backwards in terms of technical ability and creativity. That's what I think when I reivew the previous couple of years output/efforts. Tumblr is a time suck and I should spend a lot less time there. And most likely I will cross post this to tumblr.

Things to work on
Make vids, doesn't matter if you haven't made an AtS vid for a couple of years. Just make any. Even if they suck. And enjoy it again.

Vid Projects that I want to finish
Ripping has just started on a new project. I have another old idea that needs a ton of source that I should really just get started on.

As I'm not going to produce any more so late in the year, I thought I would do this.

Previous years
2011   2010     2009    2008    2007    2006

This Years vids :
January :    Snow  - Multifandom film-verse (fantasy with Snow as theme)

February :  Everybody Loves me   Tony Stark/Iron Man Character study

March:       Changes      Buffy Season 4 Overview

April:          Little Bird     River Tam (Firefly) Character study

September : Blue           Loki Character study (Thor)

October:     Yellow          William & Peggy (Return to Cranford) Relationship vid

Heads Will Roll    Sleepy Hollow overview with focus on Ichabod.

December : Feeling Good   Loki (Avengers ) humour based character overview.

Just eight this year, but no vidlets. Can't say I'm too excited/happy with the output this year. I had wanted to do a Seasonal vid in December but no inspiration at this time.  I hit a wall in May that didn't crumble until September - and I feel I'm still stepping over the 'rubble' to some extent.

Favourite Vid
I thought it would be simple to pick a favourite but after re-watching them all I found it impossible to choose.  I love 'Blue' because Loki (Thor) is fascinating to me, 'Yellow' is very pretty source and guess what, a happy ending! 'Everybody Loves Me ' is a real fun Stark and 'Feeling Good' likewise.  I guess there is no stand out amongst them.

Least Favourite
I feel  'Heads Will Roll' was a little rushed for Halloween and it suffered just a bit for it.  It's still fun to watch, but I'd like to do another Depp film with perhaps more care and time.

Most Successful
Taking into account LiveJournal comments both 'Everybody Loves Me' and then 'Blue' had a good response (comments overall are down anyway). On Youtube is the main streaming site where my vids seem to be viewed the most 'Everybody Loves Me' and 'Yellow' are popular.

Most Under appreciated, IMO.
Feeling Good has just yet registered one comment on LiveJournal, so that's a little disappointing. Hits for it on Youtube are going ok-ish I suppose.  I thought it perhaps merited a bit more response really.

Most Fun to make
Feeling Good. I'd visualised most of this vid as soon as I heard the vid bunny song and it felt wonderful to get it to come together as I pictured.

Biggest Vid fail.
After having loaded Sony Vegas on my machine last January not using it to make a vid or even play around with at all this year. I do kind of hate change and have to force myself to try these things. It's going to have to be a project next year. Also this year was the first time I have started a vid that I later abandoned. I suspect there is nothing wrong with the idea, i just wasn't in the right frame of mind to continue with the project.

Hardest to Make
From a technical point of view - Snow had the most varied sources and mixed aspect ratios to try to unify.  Blue was a little tricky to start off without crushing the newly kindled desire to vid again.  Other than that none of the vids this year have been particularly taxing or difficult.

Kick Ass/Sexiest
Iron Man or Loki are always kick ass and any that may feature Mr Hiddleston appeal visually to me.  Strong females haven't dominated the vids as they did last year but they do make a token appearance.

Unintentionally telling video.
Most telling by it's absence. No AtS vids, not even in crossovers. This was 'my show' and I haven't made a vid since April 2011.  Saddening and I don't feel the kind of connection to the show as I once did. I think I need to rediscover it with a re-watch, and find some inspiration.

Things I've learnt this year
Pretty much zip,  except that the muse can disappear easily. Make the most of it while you have it. And you can't vid with cats sitting right in front of your computer screen. Or on your hands as you try to use the keyboard.

Things to work on
Go see last year's comment. I haven't done any of those. Add AtS vid to it perhaps. Anyone suggest some good Sony Vegas on line tutorials - i could wade through the masses that are on Youtube but I think I'd give up too easy.

Vid Projects that I want to finish
I suppose I should pull out that one unfinished vid just so I don't feel it's beaten me.  I never did real comedy vids this year. I have two silly ideas but one requires many sources (again ) and that always puts me off.

Thoughts or comments are much appreciated.

This Years vids :

January          - Spitfire - Zoe Washburne Firefly
February         -Elizabeth - Films Elizabeth & Elizabeth, The Golden Age
March             - Signal To Noise - Remake of older 2006 vid -Serenity
April               - Now Three -Angel The Series Angel/Cordy/Connor
May                 - History Repeating - Blackadder - Ensemble
                        - Sing - Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Once More,With Feeling episodic vid
June               - Extraterrestrial - Fifth Element - Leeloo, Leeloo/Korben
August           - Fireflies -Avatar Jake Sully
October         - Dragula - Underworld - Selene
November     - Be With Me - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike and Drusilla
                      - O Come O Come Emmanuel - Supernatural - Castiel (Vidlet)
December     - Silent Night, Broken Night - Harry Potter, Harry, Hermione & Ron (vidlet)
                      - Sleigh Ride - Firefly - Ensemble (vidlet)

In terms of productivity that's thirteen (unlucky for some) and even the vidlets are over 2 minutes each. I'm pleased with that. It's the most since I started meme-ing her at LJ.

Favourite Vid
Oh I always struggle with this one. So Elizabeth for my choice of music and for actually having a go at making the vid. A real personal favourite but perhaps not with anyone else.  I also love how Signal To Noise turned out after it's remake. I started again from scratch and changed whole sections. I still wonder how I managed with WMM when I first made it.

Least Favourite
Fireflies I suppose - I don't hate the vid but it felt the most 'forced. I didn't come up with the song/vid idea personally. This was a 'surprise'birthday vid gift for my daughter, much time spent second guessing what she expected to see and why she always saw this song vidded to that film (and would constantly remind me that I needed to do it)In the end it was for the very literal 'firefly' scenes which whilst very pretty, wasn't much to hang a whole vid on. I was pleased with the final closing sequence and Ellie loved it so not a failure in that sense.
Most Successful
Based on LJ comments/ recs and YT thumbs up it was Spitfire - Zoe from Firefly. I feel that this is mainly due to the popularity of the character and that there's not that many videos around for her. Despite the mind numbing music choice even! Good way to start the vidding year.

Most Under appreciated, IMO.
I always feel churlish when picking one out. 'Elizabeth' I understand to be a very acquired taste so I wasn't expecting much response to that. 'Sing' made barely a ripple but episodic vids are tricky and perhaps this didn't hit the mark - relationship vids tend to garner more interest and as I wasn't trying to focus on one in particular, that may account for the lack of comments.

Most Fun to make
Dragula - Rob Zombie, vampires, action scenes in sexy leather and latex. What's not to love. I don't usually make challenge vid but when Driver Picks the Music posted the Halloween song round I had the urge to make the underworld vid I'd been promising myself a while. Didn't have to make sense I just loved playing with the motion.   Also a mention for 'Sleigh Ride' tiny seasonal Firefly vidlet with a very limited amount of source. A two day

Biggest Vid fail.
Really? Not making more relationship vids. My Dollhouse vid bunny is still in it's hutch. Perhaps the biggest sin is using The Prodigy for Zoe. My ears still bleed. Then again perhaps the biggest fail is not being able to spot them.

Hardest to Make
History Repeating had a couple of tech issues. A series renowned for sparkling wit and dialogue with less and less sight gags as it progressed. Stop talking for just a few seconds please! And possibly the worst quality DVD source I've had the misfortune to vid. Far grainier and murky than even early BtVS which gave me grief in 'Be With Me' gah! As none of the vids were too deep this year I wasn't troubled with narrative issues.

Kick Ass/Sexiest
There's many a moment in Dragula that fits the bill. From 0.36secs to 0.41secs always raises a stupid grin from me. Plus the whole  'Do it baby, Do it Baby, burn like an animal'.  Yeah. Dragula.

Unintentionally telling video.
Not one single vid but looking at the collection as a whole. Four kick Ass females in 'Spitfire', 'Elizabeth', 'Extraterrestrial' and 'Dragula'. That's telling right?

Things I've learnt this year
Pretty much a a repeat from previous years. Please yourself. Always. Pick the fandom and the music you love and don't worry about whether the vid will be popular. This is supposed to be fun.

Things to work on
I was given Sony Vegas for Christmas so when time permits I'll be playing with it and see what happens. I'd like to tackle new styles of music. Sure I'm pretty varied at the moment, but there are whole genre's of music that I haven't worked with that deserve some effort. It may not work out but I should give it a go. I also want to tackle some old source (films ideally)

Vid Projects that I want to finish
Looking back I was pleased that I at least managed to remaster 'Signal To Noise' as threatened. Plus there were those two relationship vids.  Dollhouse still remains high on the list along with perhaps more comedy vids(it's been fairly chuckle free this year) and I would love to make a Buffy (the character) study and the same for Angel (the character) separate vids though - let's not get those kids get together it'll all end in tears. Or we could and that could be one of the ship vids.  Oh and I have a seasonal vid that's quite long on the time line now - that needs completing.

Thoughts anyone??

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your vid? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I don't use a beta. I have twice, a long while back, asked dearly respected vidders to look over a couple of vids but in all honesty prefer to work solo.  Then I can take full responsibililty for any horrors unleashed on the viewers.

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you rip source? Do you listen to your vid song immediately before vidding, months before vidding, or just while working on it?

All of the above. Depending on when I find the song I may listen to it for a year before I starting on the project. There's an orderly queue for vid bunnies, but sometimes I get a queue jumper where I'm in the mood to get started.

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to do for a vid?

I drew a pair of spectacles and curly moustache on Marc Blucas for a comedy vid.

27 – Where is your favorite place to vid? Where would be your perfect vidding spot?

I hate lap tops. I am so used to working at my PC which is in the study, I don't vid anywhere else.  Perfect vidding spot is right there without any interruptions.

28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether vidding together, or having an artist or writer work on a piece about your vid?

Not with the actual vidding process although I have discussed ideas with [ profile] acrazywench and [ profile] whiskyinmind as they have been good enough to find great songs for me. Enablers.

29 – What is your current project or projects?

At the moment I'm hoping to make several seasonal/christmas vidlets and then possibly something longer,  holiday madness permitting. I've already posted one with another in the final stages. I don't have more than one thing on the timeline but I am always throwing project ideas around my brain at any one time.

30 – Do you have a favorite vid you've made? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

Oh noes, that's like choosing a favourite child. Of course there are a few I feel very proud of, and others not so much (mainly the very early vids)  but I couldn't say just one.

Well that took longer than 30 days. Now I need to sort out a holiday season layout for LJ which is feeling rather neglected.  The end of year Vidding Meme will be posted after Christmas.

Days 14- 17

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your vids from?

Vid bunnies are inspired for the most part, by music. Song lyrics/mood or melody is what I start with.  If I want to vid a fandom or film and I don't have the song first then I get into all kinds of trouble.

19 – When you have vid ideas, do you sit down and start vidding right away, or do you write down the idea for further exploration later?

Oh to be able to start the process the minute an idea strikes. Sadly I don't live in bizarro world.  Sometimes the really strong ideas have to be tackled sooner  rather than later i.e. earmark the weekend, or they just eat you up. As a rule I copy the song - I don't need notes as the minute the song generates the idea I never forget - into the Vid Shortlist folder in My Music. There it will sit with around 15 others waiting for me to pick the next project. Once I decide which to start then I may make notes against lyrics or for instrumentals, a break down of the piece's structure.

20 – Do you ever get ideas inspired from other people's stories, vids, or art in the same fandom?

Apart from the very first inspiration from other peoples vids to start vidding myself, then no. To be perfectly honest my reactions tend to be 'OMG fantastic'and/or 'OMG I am crap and shouldn't bother' but I cannot recall a single instance where someone else's vid has inspired me to rush out and make vid. I will admire and make mental notes on techniques and effects that I may
think will be useful, but never been inspired. They have on many occasion been the catalyst to watch a film or show.

21 – Sequels – Have you ever created a sequel to a vid you made, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

No, and personally I have nothing against them but have never felt the need to pick up a story again. I don't tend to vid AU's so perhaps that is why.

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

No I haven't.  Primarily I vid for myself. I have made gift vids as surprises, there's no pressure or expectation on those. However the minute there's a deadline and a song to find for a project that hasn't evolved in the normal way,  it's not going to end well.  Also it' a confidence thing, I can cope well with my own disappointment at vids never quite being what you'd envisaged but I'd hate to impose that on another - even if I am sure they'd leave very polite feedback.

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

I have my own site Art of Vidding. Everything is on there for downloading and links to streams.  I also announce on my journal and some relevant vidding/fandom Livejournal communities,  as this tends to generate most reaction.  As for streaming, no one site is perfect so I tend to have several sites - Vimeo is the best quality but I password protect, Viddler doesn't (at present) have copyright problems so I put everything there and link to that for my website. I also embed vids on ning groups and Buffytube. Finally there are about half of my vids on YouTube that I've actually posted.

14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever vidded higher than you're comfortable with? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the vid you're making is G-rated instead?

I'll go as high as I think necessary for the vid I want to make. You won't find me often out of my comfort zone so the rating will not shock me. I don't edit vids thinking this is a only G or a PG, Normally my source dictates the level which wanders into an 18 (UK classification) but I don't like extreme gore or violence so it's not something that comes up too often.

15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a vid?

If I ever make a vid with triggery scenes of extreme violence and rape etc I would warn, but so far I haven't. I made a comment about no Rileys being hurt in the making of a vid (in jest of course) and that's probably it. I've also warned for swearing (odd words) holy water splashage and finger bending. Mostly the vids I assume are viewed by fans of the shows so they should be aware of the content.

16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

Funny things summaries- how much do you say? Do I want to influence what a viewer will see in my vid?    I like to keep them fairly brief, not give too much away and often will quote a pertinent line from the lyrics or quotation that may have triggered the whole project.   Personally if I see a summary which is more like a ficlet or drabble I'm less inclined to watch the vid.

17 – Titles – Do you try to use something different than the song? Why or why not?

Nearly all the vids I have made to date have the Song Title (or part of) - another four have a dominant Lyric line from the song instead of the title. The rest that do not  are instrumental /classical music where the title would be nonsense. I like using the Song Titles whereever possible, most of which I feel do make sense.

Vidding Meme

I've been a bit slack with this but we'll see if we can catch up over the next few days. Gives me a bit of a break between website building.

Days 1-2
Days 3- 5
Days 6-10

Days 11-13
11 – Genre – do you prefer making certain genres of vid? What kind do you tend to vid the most?

Most definitely there are genres that draw me in. I love comedies and action vids - not saying I'm particularly proficient but they are the most fun to create.  As  tendency to vid the most  I initially thought comedy and character with 'overviews' drawing up in the rear but I went and counted to be sure. So yes, 17 character focus vids but I see that many are action heavy.  15 vids were edited with the intention of being funny (and probably a few more unintentional) with the same amount of overview vids (13) as relationship studies . Interestingly most of the 'shippy'vids are older - overviews tend to be more recent efforts.  An indication of the extent of my laziness are the eight episodic vids :)

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" vid of a favorite media source but set in a different fandom? (I.e., attempted to bring the 'feel' or 'mood' of one source to a different fandom, like the zombie Mary Poppins vid)

No I haven't - but I've seen some really good ones and I feel I perhaps don't have the imagination.

13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you vid (canon shots vs. using shots out of context; AU vs. canon)? Has vidding for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I've used many shots out of context in a comedic sense, getting the cheap laugh. I've only really made one AU vid and that was comedy too.  Other than that I prefer canon to fanon. That's my canon too,  so it's likely I'll see something a shade different to the next fan and will present it how I see it.

I don't think vidding has changed the way I interpret source with which I was already familiar,  however when watching new shows and films I find myself making mental bookmarks on scenes for movement, striking composition, visuals and colour.  I guess I could go through screencaps afterwards and mark all those with 'vidding potential' my brain had identified.   It's automatic now and sometimes I feel I need to see a film I like at least twice - once to just feel it and another to start picking it apart.

Days 3 - 5

Day 6 - 10

Day 6 – When you vid, do you like vidding a certain kind of male or female archetype? (Credit to Dualbunny for that one!)

Females tend to be resilient, strong but with a few interesting flaws. I don't think that applies to the male characters though, they're mostly tortured metaphorically and on occasions literally.

7 – Have you ever had a vid (of yours) change your opinion of a character?

Not really.

8 – Have you vidded with original source? If so, why did you use original source?

No I haven't but I've provided source to someone else who made great use of it :)

9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your favorite pairings to vid?

I try not to play favourites - but there are some relationships I've dealt with more than once, so that either means I didn't get it right first time or somehow I found more to say.

AtS - Angel(us)/Darla
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I like the Fanged 4 although I'd like to make a decent Buffy/Angel vid.
Firefly/Serenity (9) None
Dollhouse (2) none

All the other fandoms no favourites.

10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone tried to vid a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

No - I don't venture outside the zone much. I do have an idea for a pairing that I don't particularly like but don't hate either. We'll see if I can make that work when I get around to doing it.

Anyhow back to creating a new website :(

Day 1 & 2 Here

Days 3 to 5

Day 3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favourite characters to vid?

Angel The Series (16) Angel
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (20) Spike so far. But I really want to do a Buffy vid
crossovers of the whedonverse series (10) N/A
Firefly/Serenity (9) Mal
Dollhouse (2) No character studies done yet
Supernatural (1) N/A
Deadwood (1) N/a
Blackadder (1) N/A

Harry Potter (2) No character studies yet but want to do Harry and Hermione (separate)
Amadeus (1) N/A
Some Like It Hot (1) Jack Lemmon
Wallace & Grommit (1) Grommit
Dracula (1992) (1) N/A
House of Flying Daggers (1) Mei
Fifth Element (1) Leeloo
Matrix Trilogy (1) N/A
Elizabeth (1) Elizabeth
Avatar (1) N/A

Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character or fandom that speaks to you more than others? Who are they,
and why did that character/fandom became your muse?

No particular character but I guess the slayerverse is the fandom that I feel I understand best and are more comfortable vidding there. It's where I started and it constantly draws me back.  The fandom has such a diverse range of interesting characters - how can you resist?

5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a vid, what did you do about it?

There's not many AtS Vids (even other character studies) that don't feature a little Angel in them. He gets in everywhere and I kind of just go with it - I do I try to pull it back to the character that I am vidding and limit Angel's appearance to only with those scenes where there is important interaction that reflects upon the primary character of the vid.  Most of the character studies include the relationships with others so with that in mind Angel does pop up often ;-)

And we're not talking Titanic (he dies at the end, you know)

I was just pondering on my next vid project and I was very aware that I have not edited a 'shippy' vid for the whedonverse in say, at least four years?  I mention it on last years vidding meme , in  2009  and in 2008.

There are at least four songs on the 'to do' list with a possibly two more. And they're good ones too.

Why am I not taking my own advice? I don't consider myself a shipper of any particular pairing to the point of hating others,  Is it because I don't want to dip my toe in the water full of devoted Spuffys, Fuffies,  Bangels, Cangels &  Wangels (is that one real I thought I made it up, but it could be Wes/Angel) recently stimulated by some 'interesting' events in Season Eight. Or that it's been so long I've forgotten how to edit this type of vid?

I did make Alive which covers a relationship (canon) but that's House of Flying Daggers.  And you can't really call a Dean/Impala vid as a true relationship vid, can you?.

So to summarize :

Plan A - play the songs on repeat until I chose one that inspires to the point of ripping clips.

Plan B - Tired of songs so bail and pick something completely different.

It would be nice to have something started before Vidukon, so at least I could say I was working on a project.

It's that time to dust off the Vidding Meme and review this year's output/progress.

If you're curious here are the previous entries

2006   2007    2008   2009

Can you believe this is the fifth year?  In reality I've been producing vids of sorts since Summer 2004 but was not on LJ so there's no details, but to summarize I was fairly prolific, hadn't learnt much about vidding (aspect ratios and WMM? ugh) but I'm still fond of some of those early pieces.

Anyhow on to this year:

January - 'If It Gives You Joy' - Whedonverse montage made for More Joy Day.

February - 'Underdog' - Firefly Capt Mal Reynolds Character study

March - 'Alive' - House of Flying Daggers - Jin and Mei Relationship vid

April - 'Slayer'- Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Slayer action experimental.

June - 'In Noctem' - Harry Potter - Overview of Six films focusing on Harry's loss.

- 'Queen Bitch' - Angel the Series - Lilah Morgan character study

September - 'Plug In Baby' - Matrix Trilogy - Trinity Action character study

October - 'Happy Together' - Supernatural - Dean & Impala fun crackish

    - 'Oh My God' - Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season Six overview heavy on the angst.

- 'Those Were The Days' - Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel The Series crossover - Fanged Four silent movie style.

December - 'What I Want for Christmas' - Film multifandom Christmas vid.

Eleven Vids and only two below 2.00 minutes in length so I guess they're classed as vidlets. One less than last year but I am really content with what I've produced this year. I felt very much the same after 2009 vids,  so that puts me in a very happy place right now with my vidding. I've always vidded primarily for myself and if I enjoy them and some others do too then the job's a good'un.

How I saw those vids this year )

If anyone has any questions about the vids I'd be very happy to talk about them....

I've immensely enjoyed browsing through this meme as it's popped up all over the flist - I have a few more to read but I'm saving them for the peace that happens between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve.  There will be a festivities cease fire won't there?     Any hoo onto to the review of my Vidding Year.  For reference here are the previous years

2006    2007    2008

I didn't realize that I had completed this since 2006 so it was really interesting scanning the old ones.    This year's output went like this (in order of completion date)

January  - Awfully Different    - Spike and Angel comedy.
February - none
March -     Amadeus - Film Overview
April -        Brick by Brick - BtVS Season 7 Overview
May -         Dollhouse - Teaser vidlet  to promote the show's return after brief hiatus late in S1 .
        -         Don't Cha - Comedy AU of the film 'Some Like It Hot'
June -       Supermassive Black Hole - AtS Gwen Raiden character study
July  -        Somewhere Else to Be - AtS Season 1 overview to celebrate 10yr anniversary
August     Puncture Repair - Firefly Simon /River vidlet
Sept         Dracula - Film overview with focus on Mina /Dracula relationship
October   Rake It In - Dollhouse S1 ensemble/overview
Nov          Reason is Treaon - AtS Lindsey MacDonald Character study
Dec          I'll be There For You - Wallace & Gromit relationship study (not a shipper vid - hehe)

In general terms a very productive vidding year for me, only two vidlets and a broad range of fandoms.

Favourite Vid
Is it always the last one you made because I'm very fond of 'I'll Be There For You' . But  perhaps my Dollhouse vid 'Rake It In' get's it this year -  a somewhat unpopular fandom but I think I managed to successfully convey my message.

Least Favourite
Not sure there is one this year... No I think each one has it's merits.

Most successful video.
I suppose in the sense of comments, links, feedback & hits that would be 'Awfully Different'  - it's a winning combination, Spike and Angel although not strictly a shippy vid. It's not a new idea or theme but I think that song helped big time.

Most under appreciated
I'm fortunate to get feedback on most of what I post these days.  I suppose 'Puncture Repair' would be the one that had the solitary response, but it's a vidlet so in proportion just about right?

Most Fun
Making 'I'll Be There For You' was fun - just in the sense that  the source is so wonderful. I mean who needs an excuse to rewatch the W&G shorts and Wererabbit several times? And as it was a gift, then it was fun watching their reaction to it.     Also 'Awfully Different' was a hoot and came together so easily for me.

Hardest to make   was possibly  'Reason Is Treason' - I know the show well but perhaps not Lindsey quite so well as I thought, plus it always seemed to be Lindsey and Angel  or Lindsey and Darla - so trying to keep the focus on his character was a little difficult.     I also spent a lot of time choosing the  'right' movements from Mozart concertos that would best lend themselves to the mood of each of the three parts of 'Amadeus'  - not that it is a hardship  to listen to such wonderful music but time consuming all the same.

Kick Ass/Sexiest vid   Supermassive Black Hole.  The opening sequence is exactly what I envisaged and no-one does latex quite like Gwen Raiden.
Things I've learnt this year.
Apart from a little more about my current editing program, technically not much. However it's the happiest I've felt about my vids/vidding in a very long time.  I have learnt to come to terms with my style, skill (or lack thereof)  and approach to it all. I feel there is a place for everyone in the vidding community -  whether they make meta/drama/comedy/experimental/recruiter/trailers/ mixes and mashups etc blah blah.  I don't worry too much whether my contribution matters because it's a drop in the ocean. It's important to me and I make what I like to see, if others enjoy it then it's a wonderful bonus.  It's a hobby that I am supposed to enjoy - and right now I finish one vid and am ready within a matter of weeks/days  to look for the next new project.  I like that feeling and long may it continue.

I've also discovered that mixing the fandoms for vids from whedonverse TV shows with films that I love,  also helps creatively. I don't feel I'm stuck in a rut and I love returning to familiar shows as much as playing with some new source.

Things to Work on
I progressed with all the points from last year. Ditch the old editing program *check*   Vid other fandoms *check*   I would like to vid some more non whedonverse tv shows - the clipping for these is a little intimidating but I think I need to do it. Worthwhile to play with effects a little more - I can't work masking to save my life and haven't explored the effects available in the editing software much - most appear on the surface to be really clunky and cheesey.  Perhaps create some experimental pieces.

Vid Projects that I want to finish.
There's nothing at the moment that is unfinished. I'm ready for my next vid Mr De Mille .  I did quite well here from last years meme- I have 16 songs on the 'most likely' vid bunny list . Four are relationship songs, 3 character studies and four instrumentals  Yeah, vid more instrumentals and finally make a couple of shipper vids long overdue.

Hey ho Flist.

Hope all's well with you at this rather wonderful and stress inducing time of year. Thanks to all who thought of me with the virtual snowflake cookies - they were a lovely surprise and also *bonus feature* NO CALORIES :D (should I be thanking lj for the oops)

I also received a really sweet snow globe from [ profile] raspberry_splat thank you so much - very pretty. Also big thank you to those who left love over at the fanvid meme. So many new vidders I've not seen before and time permitting I hope to check out these new faces. Wasn't there a thing sometime last year called 'New to Me Vidders' where we checked out and rec'd newly discovered ? I'll shall have to check the memories. I've started clipping for the next vid project which I am really looking forward to starting.

Mincemeat , Decorations, Christmas Cake (but not iced -Ellies job), Christmas Puddings, Cards, Pressies.

I'm starting on my cards tonight. I shall probably do the overseas ones first. Half way through the purchase of the presents. Amazon is my friend this year, well they will be if they don't screw up and deliver on time.

Also [ profile] nausicaa81 I sent you an lj message but I am not convinced it worked. Drop me a comment if you got it?

So I turn around and it's December 4th. WTF - where did November go?? It's frantic here in a Christmas is a comin' kind of way.

I have family arriving tomorrow so we can go to the Lincoln Fayre together - which is massive and has people travelling from all over the UK & Europe to visit . Craft stalls, food and funfair plus carolling and Cathedral services. It's fun but also pretty manic, good for just chilling and eating everything you see, not so much for actually buying Christmas pressies. Hugs to [ profile] acrazywench who has let me have her parking permit as she lives the 'right' side of town.

The fan vid love meme is blooming - I've done a little bit of commenting but still have more to do - plus like [ profile] littleheaven70 commented to me - so many vidders I don't know, vidding in the fandoms I love, these need checking out and I figure it will take a while but should be fun. I will be getting back to everyone who has left me lovely fb - it goes a long way.

If anyone is has any 'Seasonal' vids that they may want to enter into the Special Round at the AvA's that would be spiffy, it doesn't matter if you have already submitted the vid previously. All the details are here - remember it doesn't have to be a Christmas film but you can also submit vids with Christmas music and any source you please.

And finally I've started clipping etc for the next vid - this one is a present for Ellie - I'm trying to keep it quiet so if it isn't finished in time for Christmas there won't be any disappointment.

Yes count me in - love is always nice... [ profile] sdwolfpup is hosting the Fanvid Love Meme and I've posted my comment here

- Comment with your username and the fandoms you vid for (or a selection you've vidded the most for, if you're all over the place).
- People will comment telling you what their favorite vid by you is, what show/character/pairing they think you vid best, and other positive comments. They can also mention what they think you should vid more of, or anything else concerning what they like about your vidding.
- Pimp it it to your journal! <-- Done !
- This is a love meme. No wank, no insults, no concrit. Just the love, baby!

Now I'm off to spread some love to all the vidders/vids already in the comments.
thedothatgirl: (angelvidding)
It's been great reading  all my flist's responses to this - I've had fun checking off how many pet peeves I've notched up too - So now it's my turn the answer the vidding Meme
Vidding Meme this a way!! )

thedothatgirl: (Default)
This is last  years... not the most positive read around I must say.  I'm feeling far more philosophical looking back at this years vidding output - it's less (if you count the length of the vids/vidlets) but I did tackle much on the 'things I want to achieve' list.

this way to Vidding Year Meme 2008 )
