Vidder Notes: The Hollow Crown (BBC) for me, was a highlight of 2012 - even with the awesome Olympics going on in the country. I just lament that there were not accessible productions like this around when I was at school or I might have loved Shakespeare more, or at least turned up for the lessons. If you've not seen it I would recommend it. The Henriad plays including Richard II with Ben Whishaw which I do not feature in this vid, but is a thing of beauty. It has been the production that has rekindled my love/ interest for Shakespeare - and helped the following year by Whedon's Much Ado. Now I feel I want to see ALL THE PLAYS. It's a mission. I wanted to use Hal's speech I refer to above (in part) in the vid, but they stuck music on it and I don't have the skills or patience to try and extract just the dialogue. I also wanted to avoid the vid being a string of famous speeches set over generic film music.I know much of the power of Shakespeare is the prose, but the story here is interesting and is wonderfully portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, Simon Russell Beale and Jeremy Irons amongst a stellar cast. The song is by Woodkid (who is French - irony I know) and the vocals are heavily accented, in parts a little difficult to follow. It was the tone & pace of the music however, rather than those lyrics that felt appropriate for the Hollow Crown.

Date: 2014-01-23 11:51 am (UTC)Alas, I didn't watch The Hollow Crown, Shakespeare's English being too difficult for me to follow. But I soldiered on through Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing, mostly by hitting pause ever few other sentence... (which I guess says more about my love for Whedon than anything else :D)

Date: 2014-01-23 07:07 pm (UTC)I basically took down from the internet the actual play so I could painstakingly compare written words with what was said on the movie (and search for obscure words/idioms). What can I say, it was at the same time a learning experience and some kind of masochist endeavour... :D
BTW, it's a relief to hear that native speakers relate to medieval English with a bit of difficulty too. Actually, I know for a fact that I couldn't follow, like, Dante's Divina Commedia on the fly either... *shakes head*
I hope they'll release The Hollow Crown in Italy soon so at least I will be able to watch it dubbed (even if this way I'd miss Tom Hiddleston wonderful voice, sigh...)

Date: 2014-01-25 02:10 pm (UTC)The more I see Shakespeare performed the easier it becomes to understand. The very good actors are able to convey the intent even if you don't understand every word.
Shakespeare is nothing compared to Geoffrey Chaucer and the Canterbury tales. Reading it is hard but listening to it is impossible! That's very old English.

Date: 2014-01-23 06:22 pm (UTC)I have so many Shakespeare plays to cover but it seems a joy now not a hardship as it was in school.
As for history (especially the early English Kings) I usually have to pull out the royal family tree to double check who and when!

Date: 2014-01-23 03:43 pm (UTC)This was such a great series. All the actors were stellar, but I thought Jeremy Irons in particular was monumental as Henry IV. He gave a performance for the ages.

Date: 2014-01-23 06:28 pm (UTC)Especially that last one where I usually get something in my eye... It's so good when all the cast bring their 'A game' to a production and I think this was one of those.
So pleased you enjoyed it, good to know what works too so thank you so much for commenting.
