Am I the last one to do the Vidding Meme?
Apr. 4th, 2008 06:13 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Lots of vidders on my flist have done this and tagged anyone who hasn't - Oooh that includes me so seeing as I am having a skive this Friday afternoon here are my thoughts (behind a cut even! )
I won't tag anyone specifically as I think it's been done but if you vid I'd love to see your take on the questions.
1. When did you first start vidding?
August 2004. ye gods!
2. What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
I went to an AtS Convention where they played fanvids in between the Q&A's - first time I had ever seen them. I tried desperately to find the same vids on line but I did find
charmax ,
sdwolfpup and
sockkpuppett sites and spent a whole year or so watching everything they'd made plus many more until a year later I attempted some pretty obvious song/ideas I'd stock piled myself.
3. What do you or have you vidded?
Until now just the Whedonverse (Buffy/Angel/Firefly) Presently these are the only shows/characters I care to the extent that I would want to vid. There is one other show I may dally with this year, but we'll have to see how that progresses. I would love to try movies but just need 'that' song.
4. Where do you draw your inspiration from for vids? Is it the song? An idea? Someone else?
So far it has always been the song. The lyrics will suggest a pairing/character or situation - or in the case of instrumentals just the style of the music will trigger associations with a particular show or episode. I can't really work any other way. I have tried to find songs that may suit a show or Character but none seem to inspire although I am always open to suggestions.
5. What was your favorite video to make or do?
Toughie. It wavers between 'House Rules' -thanks to
mara_sho and ' Swell Party'. Both AtS vids from strong songs that from the moment I heard them I could visualize the scenes that would work. All the clips just fell into place on the timeline I don't think either took too long to make and were technically angst free. As both were comedic I also got a huge laugh out of making them. What? I always laugh at my own jokes....
6. What was your least favorite video to make or do?
Probably the one that's sitting on the timeline right now. I do hope I come to love it nearer completion.
7. Which video are you most proud of?
Signal to Noise, although I know it could be tweaked. I loved 'Serenity' so much I was very apprehensive about making a vid using source that was so special to me. Fortunately I think I found a truly great song (although it was at least 3 minutes too long in it's original state)spent a long time thinking about the structure and was generally satisfied with the result.
8. What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten?
Any feedback from other vidders is special from a technical point of view. Comments from fans who are moved emotionally is adored. There are also a few vidders whose work I have always loved like
charmax and when they take the time to leave feedback I feel honoured. I was stunned when
heresluck Rec'd 'Signal to Noise' particularly as, to me they had made the best Serenity vid I had ever seen 'New Frontier'. I'm such as slacker with giving feedback that I love it when any of the vidders on my flist take time to comment.
9. What is your opinion on clip theft?
It used to enrage me - now I just get annoyed at the rudeness & laziness. Had they asked for help I would have given it.
10. Favorite genre to vid to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU)?
Comedy but I do like to spread it around, - that said thoug AU's - I don't think I have the imagination, so I kind of leave well alone.
11. Favorite pairing(s)?
Whatever the songs suggests but I am a little partial to Buffy/Angel/Angelus, so may 'hear' that rather than some other pairings.
12. What just drives you up the wall when it comes to vidding?
How long have you got? On the tech side stuff like - the different aspect ratios for BtVS/AtS? Why? I still use the numpty WMM to edit and there is no way round it other than to crop down the clips to avoid the squash/stretch. Also I hate being such a technotwit with limited time and intellect - oh to be able to just spend a day playing with more sophisticated editing programs and other such shiny stuff like avisynth.
13. Is vidding a pastime, hobby or something to help gain experience to do more later in life?
It's another way for me to express fandom love of the whedonverse. That makes it a pastime involving my obsession.
14. What is your latest project or idea for your next vid if your muse isn't dead?
I refer to point 6 - I love the song, I love the character but it's not coming together as I'd like. I'll be firing up the paddles and shouting 'clear!' any time soon.
15. Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to vid/ is a newbie?
Watch lots of different vids and make a note of what you enjoy about them. Also commercials, trailers and the like. Have a theme/story to tell, it doesn't have to be deep/ meaningful or meta, but it does help to have a point. I hear tell that beta's you trust are useful, but ultimately I would always say make the vid for yourself and then you know that there will be at least one person who will love it.
Don't expect brilliant results first time out or to get feedback. And finally for goodness sake have fun.

Re: I liked reading your meme.
Date: 2008-04-05 12:07 pm (UTC)My goodness! I hope I was polite :) I knew as much about giving feedback as I did vidding then.
I remember all your slayerverse vids with great fondness. I used to download them and me and
And I think we do have a similar taste in humour - I just wish I'd thought of 'Tiptoe through the tulips' for a Spike/Xander vid first - Oh and there was 'Right Said Fred' for Giles & the scoobies too ! :D
